Leigh is a community in Greater Manchester, 9.5 miles west of Manchester city centre
The town of Leigh has a very strong mining background, which developed especially after the town was connected to the canals and also the railway system. The legacy of Leigh’s industrial past can be seen in very large red brick mills in the town many of which have now been developed into very attractive accommodation. They are now apartment blocks. Most of Leigh is now a residential community, with Edwardian and Victorian terraced homes around the town centre.
Leigh has a conventional town centre with shops and interior markets .Part of the town centre is pedestrianised and there are independent shops as well as national retailers. The Spinning Centre in the centre of Leigh has about thirty retail units. And a retail park created on the old Parsonage Colliery website is within walking range of the town centre.
Opened in 2008 Leigh Sports Town has an 11,000-capacity stadium (anchored by Leigh Centurions and also shared with Manchester United), a sports field for Leigh Harriers, facilities for Leigh East Rugby League Club, a university campus , hotels, recreation areas and plenty retail as well as business centers for the area. In 2011 a Morrisons store opened at the sporting activities village.
One more regeneration project is planned on the site of the former Bickershaw Colliery complex It is planned to redevelop the site and to create a park adjacent to the canal as well as housing. In 2011 “The Loom” a ₤ 50million retail centre has been built on the north side of the Bridgewater Canal with a seven-screen movie theatre.
