Goose Green is an area of central Altrincham, located behind Altrincham hospital and bordered by Lloyd St. In recent years Goose Green has established a reputation as a an entertainment centre with bars offering craft beer and live music and it is the the venue for the very popular Goose Green Festival held every August. Goose Green benefits from a number of major amenities situated nearby including Total Fitness, a Sainsbury superstore and multiplex cinema. The property’s tenants include Games Workshop, Runway Pilates, Hidden Hearing and Costello’s bar.
Not so long ago however Goose Green was just a collection of workers cottages, and it is thought the first records of the area called Goose Green were made on maps in the late 1700s . Then it was just cottages bordering a square and in 1976 those cottages were bought by a property developer and the transformation into the vibrant and distinctive area that exists today began.
Three of the original cottages were owned by British American Tobacco who had a grocery shop on Stamford New Road. They had thought of developing the cottages but they decided instead to put the cottages up for auction and they were bought for commercial development by Mr Rubin. Although the cost of the purchase was nominal the work that had to be carried out on the caottages was extensive and costly and took almost 2 years. At the time of purchase the cottages witer unfit for habitation. In 1986 the developer bought another 5 cottages in Goose Green were purchased from the tenants and these cottages were in much better condition and the tenants were paid fairly for the purchase. This was the foundation for the Goose Green village, the first tenant was a wine bar called Ganders and that was very successful, other commercial ventures followed .
